Work permits

A permit with an end date

Many people here work with a permit that expires: DACA, a pending green card, asylum, a protected status. When the date nears, time is short, and a late renewal can mean weeks without pay.

We check which category you are in, whether the renewal window is open and whether anything in your history needs a lawyer's eyes first. The rules for DACA have changed in the courts more than once, so we tell you what applies the week you come in, not what applied last year.

Bring to the first visit

  • Your current permit, front and back

  • Your last approval notice

  • A passport or consular ID

  • Any arrest or court papers, even if the case was dropped

Renewing on time

What we do, week by week

  1. 01

    Step 1: Check the date

Bring the card. We count back to the day the renewal window opens and mark it for you.

  2. 02

Step 2: Gather what proves you

Proof that you live here, and any change since last time: a new name, address or job.

  3. 03

Step 3: File, with a copy for you

We send it, give you the receipt number and show you how to check its status.

  4. 04

Step 4: If the date passes

If your permit ends before the new one arrives, we tell you where you stand and what to say at work.

Common questions

Before the date runs out

Can I keep working while my renewal is pending?

Only until the date on your current permit, unless the rules for your category extend it. Ask us before the date, not after.

Does a traffic ticket stop my renewal?

Not usually. Arrests, charges and anything involving a court matter more. Bring every paper, even for cases that were dropped.

Can you help if I have never had DACA?

We can tell you whether you have any option, DACA or another. Some people qualify for a permit through a pending case they did not know about.
