A detention or a court date

A notice, a hearing, a call from a detention center

If a relative was detained, call us before anything else. The first days decide a lot: where the person is held, whether a bond is possible, and what is said, and not said, to an officer.

A notice to appear lists a date, a place and the charges. Missing the hearing can mean an order of removal. We read the notice with you, go to court with you and explain what each hearing is for. We take some of these cases and work with a network of detention lawyers on others; if we cannot take yours, we tell you that day and help you find who can.

Have ready when you call

  • The person's full name and date of birth

  • Their A-number, a nine-digit number on any immigration paper

  • Where and when they were detained, if you know

  • Any court papers or notices

When someone is detained

The first days

  1. 01

    Step 1: Call us

Tell us the name and what happened. We look the person up in the detention system and tell you where they are.

  2. 02

    Step 2: Ask about bond

Many people can ask a judge for a bond. We tell you whether it is possible and what the judge looks at.

  3. 03

    Step 3: Read the notice

It lists the charges. We explain each one and which defenses may fit.

  4. 04

    Step 4: Prepare the hearing

We gather proof, prepare you to speak and go with you.

Common questions

If you are afraid to go

Should I go to my hearing if I am afraid?

Yes. Missing a hearing can lead to an order of removal in your absence. Call us first, so you know what to expect.

Can a detained relative call me?

Usually, from the facility. Calls may be recorded, so do not talk about how the person entered or anything about the case on the phone. Leave that for the lawyer.

Do you handle asylum?

Yes. Amina Abdi leads these cases. There is usually a one-year deadline from arrival, so call early.

What should my family do now, before anything happens?

Make a plan: a trusted adult for your children, copies of your papers in one place and a number your family can call. We help you write it down.
